SBI group to launch mobile service to help small account-holders

BL MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 8:2014
They can get details of balance available, last five transactions on their mobiles
With account opening for those at the bottom of the pyramid gathering steam under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, State Bank of India (SBI) and its five associate banks plan to empower such account-holders with a customer call facility.
The proposed facility is aimed at helping customers get an update on, among other things, available balance, last five transactions and cheque book request on their mobile phones.
Given that those who have opened or will be opening bank accounts under the Yojana are unlikely to be tech-savvy, the bank plans to make it easy for them to access these services.
All that the customer needs to do to get the services is to either call from his/her mobile or send SMS to a dedicated mobile number.
To provide these services, the State Bank group plans to engage a service provider who can send the mobile number and other relevant details of the customer, who either calls or sends SMS for service request, to the bank’s server.
The bank wants to have five premium dedicated mobile numbers — one for customer calls, another for sending SMSes and the remaining three to be kept as reserve.
The State Bank group has estimated that the two active mobile numbers should be able to handle 10 lakh hits (customer service requests) a day each. Further, each of these numbers will need to have a capacity to handle at least 1,000 hits a minute.
On August 28, when the Yojana was launched, SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya, said: “…Banks are fully geared up to universalise banking access and financial inclusion under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.
“The use of debit cards will allow the unbanked to start building a transaction history, which can be a decisive step in initiating them towards financial inclusion. This will also help the banks for better product designing and targeting.”
The primary objective of the Yojana is to end financial exclusion by providing bank accounts to every household in the country and making available basic banking services, such as cash withdrawal and deposit, money transfer, RuPay Debit card facility, and extending mobile banking facility.
On the launch day of the Yojana, a record 1.50 crore bank accounts were estimated to have been opened. The account comes with a ₹1 lakh accident insurance cover and an additional ₹30,000 life insurance cover for those opening bank accounts before January 26, 2015.
Banks collectively will be opening about 7.5 crore accounts by January 26,
