Chennai: Bank employees’ unions have called a general strike on 28 February in support of a similar protest by all trade unions against the implementation of Khandelwal committee recommendations.
As many as 500,000 bank employees are expected to join the strike, said an All India Bank Employees Associations (AIBEA) press release.
“As none of the issues put forth by AIBEA during the 5 August 2011 strike have been resolved by the government, we have been forced to call a strike,” said C.H. Venkatachalam, general secretary of AIBEA.
The Khandelwal committee has given recommendations on key human resource (HR) challenges before state-run banks.
The committee has suggested that state-controlled banks be allowed to decide the salaries for its employees. Currently most such banks follow an industry-wide common wage settlement
The committee has also recommended variable components in the salary package and a free hand to managements of state-run banks to outsource all regular banking jobs. AIBEA is opposing these recommendations of the Khandelwal committee.
